As a rough guideline, administrators usually require editors to have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits, and to have been active in the last thirty days. Patrollers and License reviewers don't have to request this flag.
I'm trying to upload some MP3 files of songs/live performances from a band that releases them on bandcamp without a copyright so people can bootleg them freely. Would it be possible to have my MP3 upload ability enabled? Scu ba (talk) 18:29, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's definitely not part of Commons aims to "bootleg" songs. Additionally, you were blocked for a 2nd time for uploading copyvios last year, and I see from your talk page that you had some copyvios from this year. That is definitely concerning to me. MP3s are also complex as far as copyright because the composition also has to be public domain or explicitly freely licensed in addition to performance and the recording. These are explicitly stated as having been released into the public domain by the band themselves. The "bootlegger" is the name of the website that the band runs. To quote the disclaimer on the website: If anyone wants to release these albums, you’re free to do so. Here you’ll find links to audio files and cover art. Feel free to get creative with it if you like - it’s yours. Scu ba (talk) 19:34, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what else I need to do to argue my case here, I would only need autopatrol status for like a month to get these files up. You can check the website here for their release notice if you don't believe me quoting it. above. Scu ba (talk) 22:53, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am all for people publishing free music on Commons, but I don't see any evidence that this music is free. The first album from your link only shows "(c) all rights reserved". Yann (talk) 17:43, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to upload new versions of election maps in the 2024 United States elections, all of which were uploaded by users other than me. In Maryland, the state that I've focused most of my edits, ballots are still being counted and the percentage margins in each county are being updated daily, and I'm currently stuck having to ask the person who uploaded the maps for each election to update them for me. Unless I'm misinterpreting something, the copyvios I uploaded to Commons were at the very beginning of my time editing on Wikipedia (almost three years ago) and at a time I didn't fully understand copyright issues that affect the site. Y2hyaXM (talk) 13:08, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The audio files that were deleted in December 2023 were clips from congressional hearings uploaded on C-SPAN. I saw similar clips being used on the pages of some U.S. representatives and figured these kinds of clips were in the public domain. They were not. Older than that were some images I uploaded of Joe Vogel, a Maryland state delegate who personally emailed me the images for use on Wikipedia, but were deleted by a VRT editor because they deemed that the images didn't have sufficient permissions. Y2hyaXM (talk) 14:02, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since these file deletions, I've generally avoided asking state legislators for images to use on Wikipedia and have made sure that the audio clips I upload to Wikimedia are in the public domain, whether those clips be from videos uploaded by U.S. representatives onto their social media platforms (PD-USCongress) or from within the U.S. House chamber itself. I don't think I'm too concerned about the copyvios anymore since it's been quite a while now. I was convinced by their answers and wanted to get your take on it. They've made lots of good contributions and deserve a chance. It's totally up to you whether you want to grant them autopatrol temporarily or permanently. Best, Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 18:07, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I could re-apply to make it permanent at any time, yeah? Not sure how soon I'm going to need to overwrite someone else's maps again, especially when Maryland should probably finalize their margins by the end of next week. Y2hyaXM (talk) 20:09, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear colleagues. I would like to try using AutoWikiBrowser on my files for typo fixing, category checking, find-replace. I think VisualFileChange will not cover all my needs. Please, grant me access if appropriate. UPF official (talk) 10:44, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose honestly, I'm not sold on the idea of you requesting AutoWikiBrowser access a day after you were granted autopatrolled. There was a lot of issues with your edits when you requested the simplest autopatrol right. On the other hand, AWB is much more complicated and needs to be handled very carefully. In my opinion, you should have waited some time before requesting AWB and getting familiar with the rights you were recently granted. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 20:24, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say that's necessarily the proper procedure. It's more of my personal opinion and definitely one way to do it. I'd like to hear what others think about this too. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 08:48, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In fact this request is an experiment, Iwaqarhashmi. If you think it is not good I do not push for it. It will take me a while before uploading many more photos to really MASS process. Unable to know closely what AutoWikiBrowser is in practice, hard for me to judge if I need it. Thank you for your time. UPF official (talk) 09:01, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
UPF official: I'm not the one to say if it's good for you or not. I'm just a user like you, trying to help. Ultimately, it's up to the respectful admins to decide if it's something they want to allow. Best of luck to you! Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 09:32, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As a rough guideline, administrators usually require editors to have made at least 1,000 useful, non-botlike edits or a large amount of justified renaming requests at Commons before they will consider granting the filemover right.
